Ålesund is one of Norway's most visually striking towns - rebuilt entirely in Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) style after a devastating fire in 1904 destroyed 850 buildings. Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, a great fan of the area, helped finance the reconstruction, and the result is a fairy-tale townscape of turrets, spires, and ornate facades unique in Scandinavia.
Set across several islands at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord, Ålesund is the gateway to some of Norway's most dramatic fjord scenery. The Aksla viewpoint (418 steps) offers a panoramic view of the Art Nouveau town, surrounding islands, and the Sunnmøre Alps.
