Anchorage is the urban gateway to Alaska's vast wilderness - a modern city of 300,000 surrounded by six mountain ranges, where moose wander through neighborhoods and bears fish for salmon in nearby streams. Half of Alaska's population lives here, making it the state's cultural and commercial center.
The city sits on Cook Inlet with the Chugach Mountains rising directly behind it, creating some of the most dramatic urban scenery in America. The Tony Knowles Coastal Trail offers 11 miles of waterfront walking and cycling with views of Denali on clear days. Day trips to glaciers, wildlife viewing, and fishing are within easy reach.
Anchorage serves as the launching point for adventures throughout Alaska - Kenai Fjords National Park, Prince William Sound, Denali National Park, and the Kenai Peninsula are all accessible by road, rail, or floatplane.
The best time to visit Anchorage is summer (June to August), when temperatures are pleasant and daylight is virtually endless - up to 22 hours in June.
June brings the summer solstice with the longest days and midnight sun. July is the warmest month (13-19°C) with salmon runs and excellent wildlife viewing. August offers slightly shorter days but excellent fishing and the first hints of fall color.
Winter (November to March) is cold and dark (-10 to -5°C) but offers the Northern Lights, world-class skiing at Alyeska Resort, and the Iditarod sled dog race (March). The shoulder seasons are brief but offer lower prices.
North America's tallest peak (20,310 ft) is visible from Anchorage on clear days. Denali National Park is a 4-5 hour drive or scenic train ride.
