Bangui, the capital of the Central African Republic, sits on the northern bank of the Ubangi River with the Democratic Republic of Congo just across the water. The city occupies a dramatic setting surrounded by forested hills and rapids, giving it a unique tropical atmosphere.
Despite its challenging recent history, Bangui retains a certain charm with its riverside promenade, colonial-era architecture, and vibrant markets. The nearby Dzanga-Sangha Reserve protects some of Central Africa's last pristine rainforest, home to forest elephants, western lowland gorillas, and the BaAka pygmy communities.
December to March is the dry season with less humidity and comfortable temperatures. The wet season (May-October) brings heavy daily downpours. Temperatures are warm year-round (25-35°C).
