Benguela is a historic coastal city in western Angola, founded by the Portuguese in 1617 as a major slave trade port. Today, the city is being carefully restored and reveals beautiful colonial architecture, including pastel-colored churches, a fort, and grand administrative buildings along tree-lined avenues.
The Benguela coastline stretches for miles with pristine, uncrowded beaches and warm Atlantic waters. The nearby Baia Azul (Blue Bay) is a spectacular crescent of turquoise water, while the offshore islands offer excellent diving. The Benguela Railway - one of Africa's most scenic train routes - connects the coast to the highlands.
May to September is the dry season with pleasant temperatures (20-26°C). The rainy season (October-April) brings warm, humid weather. Year-round the Benguela Current keeps temperatures moderate.
