Chengdu, the laid-back capital of Sichuan province, is a city where giant pandas munch bamboo, teahouses overflow with locals playing mahjong, and fiery hotpot restaurants fill the air with the unmistakable aroma of Sichuan peppercorns. UNESCO designated it a City of Gastronomy, and the food alone - from numbingly spicy mapo tofu to street-side dan dan noodles - justifies the journey.
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the world's premier facility for seeing these beloved animals up close. Beyond pandas, the city offers the ancient Jinli Street, the serene Wuhou Shrine honoring Three Kingdoms heroes, and a vibrant nightlife scene. Chengdu also serves as the gateway to spectacular Sichuan landscapes including Jiuzhaigou Valley and Mount Emei.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October) bring pleasant temperatures and less rain. Chengdu is famously overcast year-round, but these seasons offer the best chance of sunshine. Visit the panda base early morning when the animals are most active.
