Elmina is one of the most historically significant towns in West Africa, home to the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa - Elmina Castle (São Jorge da Mina), built by the Portuguese in 1482. The castle became a major hub of the transatlantic slave trade, and today serves as a powerful UNESCO World Heritage Site and memorial.
Beyond its solemn history, Elmina is a vibrant fishing town where colorful painted pirogues crowd the harbor and the daily fish market is a sensory spectacle. Fort St. Jago overlooks the town from a hilltop, the Posuban shrines display Asafo company history, and the surrounding coastline offers beautiful beaches.
November to March is the dry season with warm, sunny weather (26-32°C). The rainy season (April-July) brings heavy downpours. August-September is a brief dry interlude. Year-round temperatures are warm and tropical.
