Gisborne is the first city in the world to see the sunrise each day, located on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. The region has strong Maori culture - over 50% of the population identifies as Maori - and was where Captain Cook first landed in New Zealand in 1769.
The city is surrounded by excellent surf beaches (Wainui Beach is legendary), Eastwoodhill Arboretum (the southern hemisphere's largest collection of northern hemisphere trees), and outstanding Chardonnay vineyards.
Visit Gisborne November-March for warm weather and surf. New Year's sunrise is world-famous - thousands gather at the East Cape. The Chardonnay harvest is in March.
