Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's most spectacular natural landscapes - nearly 2,000 limestone pillars and islands rising dramatically from emerald-green waters in the Gulf of Tonkin. The bay's name means "descending dragon," and legend says the islands were formed by dragons spitting jade and jewels.
Overnight junk boat cruises are the classic way to experience the bay, sailing past towering karsts, through hidden caves, and into floating fishing villages. Kayaking through grottoes, swimming in secluded lagoons, and watching the sunrise from the deck of a traditional wooden junk are among Vietnam's most magical travel experiences.
October-November and March-April offer the best combination of weather and visibility. Summer (June-August) is hot and hazy, winter (December-February) can be foggy.
