Heidelberg is the quintessential German romantic city - its partly ruined red sandstone castle perched above the Neckar River, its Baroque old town, and its ancient university (Germany's oldest, founded 1386) have enchanted visitors for centuries. Mark Twain, Goethe, and the Romantic poets all fell under its spell.
The Alte Brücke (Old Bridge), the Philosopher's Walk with its panoramic views, and the Hauptstraße - one of Europe's longest pedestrian streets - create a city that's effortlessly walkable and endlessly photogenic. Despite its tourist popularity, Heidelberg retains the lively atmosphere of a student city, with excellent restaurants, cozy wine bars, and a cultural scene that punches above its weight.
April to October is ideal (14-26°C). Heidelberg has one of Germany's warmest climates. Summer is perfect but busy. Christmas markets are excellent. The castle is atmospheric year-round.
