Isla Holbox is a car-free island off the northern tip of the Yucatán Peninsula where sand streets, hammocks over turquoise water, and bioluminescent plankton create a laid-back Caribbean paradise far from Cancún's crowds. The island sits where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico.
From June to September, whale sharks - the world's largest fish - congregate in the waters around Holbox to feed on plankton, offering one of the best swimming-with-whale-sharks experiences on Earth. The island's shallow, calm waters and colorful street art murals have made it increasingly popular, but its car-free, no-high-rise character remains intact.
