Kandy is Sri Lanka's cultural capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, set around a picturesque lake in the central highlands. The city is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic (Sri Dalada Maligawa), which houses a tooth of the Buddha and is one of Buddhism's most important pilgrimage sites.
Surrounded by lush tea plantations, tropical forests, and misty mountains, Kandy offers a cooler climate than the coast and a rich cultural heritage. The Perahera festival in July/August features spectacular elephant processions, Kandyan dance performances, and fire-walking - one of Asia's grandest celebrations.
January to April is the driest period. July-August brings the Esala Perahera festival. Year-round temperatures are a pleasant 20-28°C.
