Los Roques is a stunning Caribbean archipelago 150 kilometers north of Caracas - a national park of over 300 islands, cays, and sandbars with crystal-clear turquoise water, white sand beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. Protected as a national park since 1972, Los Roques has escaped the mass development that has transformed much of the Caribbean, maintaining an unspoiled, pristine character.
The main island, Gran Roque, is the only inhabited cay - a tiny village of colorful posadas (guesthouses) with no cars, no high-rises, and streets of sand. From Gran Roque, boats take visitors to different cays each day - FrancisquÃ, MadrisquÃ, CrasquÃ, and Noronquà are among the most beautiful, each offering different snorkeling, kitesurfing, or simply lying on a deserted beach.
The waters are exceptionally clear, with visibility often exceeding 30 meters, making Los Roques one of the best snorkeling and diving destinations in the Caribbean. Bonefishing is world-class in the shallow flats. The islands are a marine biodiversity hotspot with sea turtles, dolphins, and over 280 species of fish.
December-May is the driest and calmest period with the best visibility for snorkeling and diving. Trade winds pick up June-August, which is ideal for kitesurfing but choppier for swimming.
