Maseru is the capital of Lesotho, the "Mountain Kingdom" - a country entirely above 1,000 meters and completely surrounded by South Africa. Sitting on the Caledon River at the border with South Africa, Maseru is a small, friendly city serving as the gateway to some of southern Africa's most spectacular mountain scenery.
The city itself has a relaxed atmosphere with colorful markets, the Royal Palace, and a growing dining scene. But Maseru's real appeal is what lies beyond - the dramatic Maluti Mountains, the Sani Pass into KwaZulu-Natal, ancient San rock art, dinosaur footprints, and Basotho pony trekking through remote highland villages.
March-May (autumn) and September-November (spring) offer the best weather with mild temperatures and clear skies. Summers (December-February) bring thunderstorms. Winters (June-August) are cold with snow in the highlands.
