Moroni is the capital of the Comoros - a volcanic archipelago in the Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and the African mainland that is one of the world's least-visited countries. The city sits on the western coast of Grande Comore (Ngazidja) in the shadow of Mount Karthala, one of the world's most active volcanoes at 2,361 meters.
The old medina of Moroni retains a distinctly Swahili-Arabian character, with narrow alleyways, carved wooden doors, and the ancient Vendredi Mosque overlooking the harbor. The city has more in common architecturally with Stone Town in Zanzibar or the old quarters of Lamu than with mainland African capitals.
The Comoros are known as the "Perfume Islands" for their production of ylang-ylang, vanilla, and cloves. Mount Karthala's summit crater - one of the largest active craters in the world - can be climbed in a challenging two-day hike through cloud forest. The coelacanth, a "living fossil" fish thought extinct for 65 million years, was rediscovered in Comorian waters in 1938.
The dry season (May-October) is the best time to visit with lower humidity, less rain, and clearer skies for the Karthala hike.
The hot, rainy season (November-April) brings cyclone risk and heavy downpours.
Temperatures are warm year-round (24-30°C) with consistently high humidity.
