Talca, capital of the Maule region, sits in the heart of Chile's largest wine-producing zone. The surrounding Maule Valley produces some of Chile's finest Carménère and Cabernet Sauvignon, with old-vine vineyards that predate the phylloxera epidemic - a living treasure of viticultural heritage.
The city served as the temporary capital of Chile during the independence era, and the declaration of independence was signed here in 1818. Today it's a pleasant, uncrowded gateway to wine touring, river rafting on the Maule River, and visits to the Altos de Lircay National Reserve in the Andes foothills, where araucaria forests and volcanic landscapes await.
March to April is harvest season - ideal for wine tours. October to December brings warm spring weather (15-28°C). Summers (January-February) can be very hot (35°C+). Winters are mild and rainy.
