Valdivia is a charming university city built where the Calle-Calle, Valdivia, and Cruces rivers converge before meeting the Pacific. Founded by Pedro de Valdivia in 1552, it was later fortified by the Spanish with a chain of 17 riverside forts - now UNESCO-nominated - to defend against pirates and Dutch invaders.
Today Valdivia is Chile's craft beer capital, with the Kunstmann brewery leading a vibrant scene. The riverside market (Mercado Fluvial) is one of Chile's most colorful, where fishermen sell their catches while sea lions lounge below the docks. The surrounding temperate rainforests, the coastal Valdivian rainforest (one of the world's few temperate rainforests), and the Huilo-Huilo reserve add natural wonder.
November to March offers the warmest weather (14-24°C) and longest days. The Bierfest in January is a highlight. Rain falls year-round but summer is driest. Winters (June-August) are cool and very rainy.
