Vientiane is perhaps the most relaxed capital city in Southeast Asia - a sleepy Mekong River town with crumbling French colonial architecture, glittering Buddhist temples, and a pace of life that feels more like a provincial town than a national capital. The golden Pha That Luang stupa is the national symbol of Laos, while the Patuxai arch offers an unexpected echo of Paris's Arc de Triomphe.
The city's charm lies in its gentle rhythm: morning alms-giving ceremonies, sunset drinks on the Mekong promenade, excellent French-Lao fusion cuisine, and a thriving café culture. Vientiane is also the gateway to the spectacular karst landscapes and adventure activities around Vang Vieng.
November to February is cool and dry (18-30°C). March-May is very hot (35°C+), and June-October is the monsoon with heavy rainfall.
