Virunga National Park is Africa's oldest and most biodiverse protected area - a UNESCO World Heritage site in eastern DRC that spans 7,800 square kilometers from the Rwenzori Mountains to the volcanoes of the Albertine Rift. Established in 1925, Virunga is home to roughly one-third of the world's remaining mountain gorillas and contains an extraordinary range of habitats.
The park's centerpiece is Nyiragongo volcano, whose summit contains the world's largest lava lake - a mesmerizing, churning cauldron of molten rock that glows orange against the night sky. The overnight hike to the summit is one of Africa's most extraordinary experiences, sleeping in basic shelters on the crater rim with the lava lake illuminating the darkness below.
Despite decades of conflict in the region, Virunga has survived through the extraordinary dedication of its rangers - over 200 have been killed protecting the park. Today, tourism is slowly returning, and the gorilla trekking, volcano climbing, and Rwenzori hiking experiences are among the most intense and rewarding in Africa.
The dry seasons (January-February, June-September) offer the best trekking conditions for both gorilla tracking and the Nyiragongo volcano hike.
The rainy seasons (March-May, October-November) make trails muddy and difficult.
Always check security conditions before planning a visit - the park occasionally closes due to instability.

CultureA large Rift Valley lake shared with Uganda - hippo pods, fishing villages, and dramatic volcanic scenery.
NatureThe world's only facility for orphaned mountain gorillas - see rescued juvenile gorillas being raised by dedicated caretakers.
NatureTucked away in the northern reaches of Lake Kivu, this crescent-shaped island offers a rare, tranquil escape from the rugged intensity of the park. Visitors can paddle kayaks through crystalline waters or watch the sun dip below the horizon while eagles circle the canopy above. It is the perfect restorative pause after a strenuous hike, providing a surprisingly plush contrast to the untamed wilderness nearby.
NatureLocated in the Ishasha plains, the Lulimbi sector is a sanctuary for savannah wildlife, including elephants and topis. Unlike the dense rainforests of the south, this area consists of vast, rolling grasslands that offer unparalleled game viewing opportunities. It serves as a vital corridor for migratory species and provides a quintessential East African safari experience within the heart of the DRC.
