Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations on Earth - a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwestern Uganda that is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas. Trekking through this ancient, mist-shrouded rainforest to spend one precious hour with a habituated gorilla family is consistently ranked among the most transformative experiences in travel.

The forest itself is primeval and awe-inspiring - a dense tangle of vines, ferns, and towering trees covering steep volcanic ridges between 1,160 and 2,607 meters elevation. The trek to find the gorillas can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours, depending on where the group has moved, and the terrain is steep, muddy, and physically demanding. But the moment you first lock eyes with a silverback - a 200-kilogram alpha male watching you calmly from the undergrowth - all effort is instantly forgotten.

Bwindi is also one of Africa's most biodiverse forests, home to 120 mammal species, 348 bird species (including 23 Albertine Rift endemics), and an estimated 1,000 flowering plant species. The Batwa pygmy community, the forest's original inhabitants, offer cultural experiences sharing their deep knowledge of the forest.

The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) offer the most comfortable trekking conditions - trails are less muddy and the forest floor is firmer.

The rainy seasons (March to May and October to November) make trekking more challenging with slippery trails, but gorilla sightings are equally good and permits may be easier to secure.

Gorilla trekking is available year-round. Rain gear is essential regardless of season.
