Jinja sits at the point where the Nile - the world's longest river - begins its 6,650-kilometer journey from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean. This modest Ugandan town has earned its reputation as East Africa's adventure capital, offering some of the most thrilling white-water rafting on the planet.
The source of the Nile at Speke's point (named after the British explorer John Hanning Speke who identified it in 1862) is a serene spot where the lake's waters funnel into the river. A boat cruise to the source is a must, but it's on the rapids downstream that Jinja truly earns its adrenaline credentials. Grade V white-water rafting through the Bujagali Falls section is one of the world's top rafting experiences - huge waves, powerful rapids, and warm tropical water make it both thrilling and forgiving.
Beyond rafting, Jinja offers bungee jumping, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, quad biking, horseback riding, and tubing. The town itself is a pleasant, walkable place with good restaurants, craft markets, and a slower pace than Kampala.
The dry seasons (January-February, June-September, December) offer the best conditions for adventure activities with less rain and more consistent rapids.
Rafting is available year-round - the water is always warm (24-26°C) and the rapids are thrilling in all conditions.
The rainy seasons (March-May, October-November) bring afternoon showers but mornings are usually clear enough for activities.
