Carmel-by-the-Sea is a picture-perfect village on California's Monterey Peninsula where storybook cottages nestle among Monterey pines, and a pristine white-sand beach meets turquoise Pacific waters. The one-square-mile town has no street addresses, no chain restaurants, and no streetlights - by design.
Founded as an artists' colony in 1902, Carmel has attracted creative spirits from Jack London to Clint Eastwood (who served as mayor). Over 80 art galleries line its village streets, and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve - called "the greatest meeting of land and water in the world" - is just south of town. The famous 17-Mile Drive connects Carmel to Pacific Grove through Pebble Beach.
April-May and September-October offer the warmest, clearest weather (18-24°C). Summer fog is common. October brings warm "Indian summer" days and fewer crowds.
