Cinque Terre is a string of five colorful fishing villages - Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore - clinging to the rugged Ligurian coastline in a UNESCO World Heritage national park. Connected by scenic hiking trails and a local train, these car-free villages have preserved their medieval character with terraced vineyards, tiny harbors, and houses painted in every shade of the rainbow.
The dramatic landscape of steep terraces carved over centuries for wine and olive cultivation creates one of Italy's most photogenic settings. Swimming from rocky coves, hiking between villages, and dining on fresh pesto and seafood with local Sciacchetrà wine make this a quintessential Italian coastal experience.
April-June and September-October offer ideal hiking weather (18-25°C) and fewer crowds. Summer (July-August) is hot and extremely crowded with trail capacity limits enforced. Spring brings wildflowers and green vineyards. Autumn offers warm sea temperatures and grape harvest celebrations.
Perhaps the most picturesque of the five villages, with a natural harbor, medieval watchtower, and colorful waterfront piazza.
