The Garden Route is one of South Africa's most celebrated scenic drives - a 300-kilometer stretch of coastline between Mossel Bay and Storms River along the southern Cape, where indigenous forests, golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and charming seaside towns create a paradise for nature lovers and road trippers.
The route passes through the Tsitsikamma National Park with its thundering Storms River Mouth and suspension bridge over churning ocean, the serene Knysna Lagoon overlooked by the iconic Knysna Heads (two sandstone cliffs guarding the lagoon entrance), and the lush indigenous forests of Wilderness where rivers wind through woodlands to the sea.
Activities along the Garden Route are endless - bungee jumping off the Bloukrans Bridge (the world's highest commercial bungee at 216 meters), whale watching from the cliffs at Plettenberg Bay, forest canopy tours, ocean kayaking, and golf on world-class courses. The region is also a foodie paradise with excellent restaurants, craft breweries, and artisan markets.
Spring through autumn (October to April) is ideal with warm temperatures of 20-28°C and long sunny days. December-January is peak season.
The Garden Route has a mild, year-round climate with no true dry season - rain can fall in any month, but summer is driest.
Winter (June-August) is cooler (10-18°C) with more rain, but the landscapes are green and tourist numbers are low.
