Johannesburg is South Africa's largest city and economic powerhouse - a sprawling metropolis born from the gold rush of 1886 that has reinvented itself as one of Africa's most dynamic cultural capitals. Known as Joburg, Jozi, or eGoli (Place of Gold), the city wears its complex history openly and is transforming at breathtaking speed.
The Apartheid Museum is the essential starting point for understanding South Africa's journey. Through harrowing exhibits, personal testimonies, and immersive experiences, it traces the rise and fall of apartheid with unflinching honesty. Nearby, Constitution Hill - a former prison that held Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and countless political prisoners - now houses the Constitutional Court, symbolizing South Africa's transition from oppression to democracy.
Soweto (South Western Townships), the legendary township that was the crucible of the anti-apartheid struggle, is a must-visit. Vilakazi Street in Orlando West is the only street in the world that has been home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates - Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. The Hector Pieterson Memorial commemorates the 1976 Soweto Uprising, and bicycle tours offer intimate glimpses of township life, culture, and hospitality.
Modern Joburg is a creative renaissance city. The Maboneng Precinct has transformed a former industrial district into a vibrant arts neighborhood with galleries, restaurants, rooftop bars, and the legendary Sunday market. Braamfontein, near the University of the Witwatersrand, buzzes with vintage shops, street food, and the Neighbourgoods Market. The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (in Cape Town's sister institution) and the Johannesburg Art Gallery anchor a thriving contemporary art scene.
The food scene is diverse and exciting - from traditional shisanyama (braai/barbecue) in Soweto to fine dining in Sandton, Ethiopian injera in Yeoville, and Mozambican peri-peri chicken in the eastern suburbs.
The best time to visit Johannesburg is during the dry autumn (March to May) and late winter to spring (August to October). Joburg sits at 1,753m altitude on the highveld, giving it a subtropical highland climate that's more pleasant than you might expect for a city at this latitude.
Autumn (March to May) is excellent - warm days (20-25°C), cool evenings (10-15°C), clear skies, and the last of the summer rain fading. The autumn colors in the city's parks and jacaranda-lined streets are beautiful. April and May are dry with comfortable temperatures.
Late winter and spring (August to October) bring dry, sunny days with warming temperatures (18-27°C). September and October are particularly beautiful as Johannesburg's famous jacaranda trees burst into purple bloom, carpeting the streets in lavender. The weather is perfect for outdoor exploration.
Summer (November to February) is warm to hot (25-30°C) with dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that roll in like clockwork, often between 3-5pm. The storms are spectacular but brief, clearing to reveal brilliant sunsets. Humidity is moderate thanks to the altitude.
Winter (June to July) is dry and sunny but cold - days are comfortable (17-20°C) but nights can be near freezing (2-5°C). Joburg homes and many accommodations are poorly heated, so warm evening clothing is essential. The bright, clear winter days are excellent for sightseeing.
