Lijiang's UNESCO-listed Old Town is a labyrinth of cobblestone lanes, traditional Naxi wooden buildings, and gurgling canals fed by mountain springs, all set beneath the dramatic backdrop of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. The Naxi people, one of China's 56 recognized ethnic minorities, have preserved their unique Dongba script - the world's only living pictographic writing system - and their distinctive music and culture.
Beyond the old town, Lijiang serves as a gateway to spectacular Yunnan landscapes: the turquoise pools of Blue Moon Valley, the dizzying Tiger Leaping Gorge, and the serene Lugu Lake on the Sichuan border. The city sits at 2,400 meters elevation, giving it a perpetually spring-like climate and brilliant blue skies.
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October) offer clear skies, mild temperatures, and the best views of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Summer (June-August) is the rainy season. Winter is dry and sunny but cold at night due to the altitude.
