Airlie Beach is the mainland gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, a vibrant tropical town that pulses with the energy of travellers heading out to the reef and islands. The town's free lagoon pool on the waterfront is the social hub - a stinger-free swimming area surrounded by tropical gardens, barbecues, and cafes.
While most visitors use Airlie as a launching point for Whitsunday sailing trips and Whitehaven Beach excursions, the town has its own appeal. The main street is packed with restaurants, bars, and tour booking offices, and the surrounding area offers rainforest walks, crocodile tours on the Proserpine River, and the Conway National Park trails. Airlie is significantly more affordable than staying on Hamilton Island.
The best time to visit Airlie Beach is from June to October during the dry season with comfortable temperatures (22-27°C), clear skies, and ideal sailing conditions. This is peak season for Whitsunday trips.
Summer (December-March) is hot, humid, and wet, with stinger season requiring protective suits. However, prices drop and the water is warmest. Humpback whales migrate through July-September.
