Albany is Western Australia's oldest settled town (1826) and a significant military history site, where ANZAC troops departed for Gallipoli in 1914. The National Anzac Centre on Mount Clarence is one of Australia's most moving memorials, overlooking the harbour from which the convoy departed.
The rugged coastline features the dramatic Gap and Natural Bridge rock formations in Torndirrup National Park, where the Southern Ocean pounds against granite cliffs. Whale watching is excellent June-October, and the surrounding Great Southern wine region produces exceptional cool-climate Riesling and Pinot Noir.
Visit Albany from September to March for the best weather. Whale watching runs June-October. The ANZAC commemorations on April 25 are particularly moving. Summer is warm (25°C) without Perth's extreme heat.
