Bern, the de facto capital of Switzerland, is a UNESCO World Heritage city built on a peninsula in the turquoise Aare River. Its 6km of covered arcades (Lauben) form one of Europe's longest sheltered shopping streets, while the medieval Zytglogge clock tower has been delighting onlookers with its animated figures since 1530.
The city that inspired Einstein - he developed special relativity while working at the Bern patent office - is remarkably livable and unhurried. The Bear Park (Bern means "bear"), the Rose Garden with panoramic Old Town views, and the Paul Klee Centre designed by Renzo Piano make it a cultural gem.
May to September offers mild to warm weather (17-25°C), ideal for riverside walks and outdoor cafés. Summer locals swim in the Aare River. December Christmas markets are enchanting.
