Aix-en-Provence is the elegant heart of Provence - a sun-drenched city of plane-tree-lined boulevards, splashing fountains, and golden stone hôtels particuliers. The Cours Mirabeau, one of France's most beautiful avenues, divides the aristocratic Quartier Mazarin from the medieval Old Town.
Cézanne painted Mont Sainte-Victoire from his studio here obsessively, and the luminous Provençal light that inspired him still bathes the city. The daily markets overflow with lavender, olives, and calissons (the local almond confection), while the thermal springs that gave the city its name ("Aquae Sextiae") have drawn visitors since Roman times.
May to July and September to October are ideal (20-30°C). Lavender season is mid-June to mid-July. August is very hot and many locals are on holiday. The Festival d'Aix (July) is world-class opera.
One of France's most elegant boulevards, lined with plane trees, fountains, and café terraces.
LandmarkThe preserved atelier where Cézanne painted - his coat still hangs on the wall and objects from still lifes remain.
CultureThe limestone mountain Cézanne painted over 80 times - hiking trails offer the same views he immortalized.
NatureThe Richelme market (daily produce) and Place des Prêcheurs flower market overflow with Provençal bounty.
