Aarhus, Denmark's second city, was European Capital of Culture in 2017 and has never looked back. The ARoS art museum - topped by Olafur Eliasson's rainbow panorama walkway - is one of Scandinavia's finest, while Den Gamle By (The Old Town) is the world's first open-air museum, recreating Danish urban life from the 16th to 20th centuries.
Younger and more relaxed than Copenhagen, Aarhus is a university city with a thriving food and café culture, excellent nightlife, and a stunning harbor quarter (Aarhus Ø) that showcases Denmark's architectural ambitions. The surrounding Jutland peninsula offers Viking history, beautiful beaches, and the dramatic landscapes of Djursland and the Lake District.
May to August is warmest (14-22°C). The Aarhus Festival in September is Denmark's biggest cultural event. Summer brings long days and outdoor dining. Winters are mild but dark.
