Matera's Sassi - ancient cave dwellings carved into the walls of a dramatic limestone gorge - form one of the world's most extraordinary urban landscapes. This UNESCO World Heritage city in Basilicata has been continuously inhabited for over 9,000 years, making it one of the oldest settlements on Earth, and was named European Capital of Culture in 2019.
Once known as "the shame of Italy" for its impoverished cave-dwelling residents (evacuated in the 1950s), Matera has been reborn as a sophisticated destination where boutique hotels, restaurants, and museums now occupy the ancient caves. The ethereal landscape has served as a filming location for biblical epics, including Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are ideal with comfortable temperatures (16-26°C) for exploring the steep streets. Summer is very hot (35°C+) and the white stone amplifies the heat. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with cool temperatures and possible snow.
Two ancient cave districts (Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso) forming a dramatic UNESCO-listed landscape of cave dwellings.
