Odense, Denmark's third-largest city on the island of Funen (Fyn), is best known as the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen. The author of The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and The Snow Queen was born here in 1805, and the city celebrates his legacy with the spectacular new H.C. Andersen Museum designed by Kengo Kuma - a subterranean garden world that brings his fairy tales to life.
Beyond Andersen, Odense is a charming, bike-friendly city with a well-preserved medieval quarter, the Funen Village open-air museum, and excellent restaurants benefiting from the rich agricultural produce of the "Garden of Denmark." The city is also a gateway to Funen's castle country - the island has more castles per square kilometer than anywhere else in Europe.
May to August is warmest (14-22°C). The H.C. Andersen Festival in August brings the fairy tales to life. Summer is ideal for cycling through Funen's countryside. Winters are mild but dark.
