Carcassonne's medieval citadel (La Cité) is the most complete walled city in Europe, with 52 towers and 3km of double ramparts that look like they've emerged straight from a fairy tale. This UNESCO World Heritage fortress has guarded the strategic route between the Atlantic and Mediterranean for over 2,500 years.
Beyond the fortress walls, the Bastide Saint-Louis (lower town) offers excellent restaurants, the Canal du Midi flows peacefully through, and the surrounding Languedoc vineyards produce some of France's best-value wines. Carcassonne's July 14th fireworks display over the citadel is considered one of the most spectacular in France.
Spring and autumn offer comfortable temperatures (16-24°C) and fewer tourists. Summer brings the spectacular Bastille Day fireworks and Festival de Carcassonne but also heat (30°C+) and crowds. Winter is mild but many attractions have reduced hours.
