Avignon, the medieval city of popes, is dominated by the colossal Palais des Papes - the largest Gothic palace in the world - which served as the seat of papal power in the 14th century. Enclosed within remarkably intact medieval ramparts, the city blends Provençal charm with a rich artistic heritage that comes alive each July during the Festival d'Avignon.
The famous Pont d'Avignon (Pont Saint-Bénézet) extends partway across the Rhône, while the city's cobblestone streets lead to bustling squares, excellent Provençal restaurants, and easy access to the lavender fields and vineyards of the surrounding countryside, including the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine region.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are ideal with warm, sunny weather (18-26°C). July brings the famous theatre festival but also crowds and heat. The mistral wind can blow strongly but clears the sky to brilliant blue.
