Brașov, nestled in a valley surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains, is the most beautiful city in Transylvania and Romania's most popular tourist destination. Its Saxon-built Old Town features the massive Gothic Black Church (the largest between Vienna and Istanbul), colorful Baroque squares, and medieval towers and bastions - all set against a dramatic mountain backdrop with the "BRAȘOV" Hollywood-style sign on Tampa Mountain.
The city is the perfect base for exploring Transylvania's greatest hits: Bran Castle (the "Dracula" castle), the fairytale Peleș Castle, fortified Saxon churches, and bear-watching in the Carpathians. Nearby Poiana Brașov is Romania's most popular ski resort, making Brașov a year-round destination.
May to September is best (15-25°C). Autumn colors (October) are spectacular in the Carpathians. December-March for skiing at Poiana Brașov. Bears descend to lower elevations in spring and autumn.
