Timișoara is Romania's most Western-looking city - a Habsburg-era gem where the 1989 Romanian Revolution began, ending Nicolae Ceaușescu's communist dictatorship. This was the first European city to have electric street lighting (1884), and its progressive spirit endures.
The city's three magnificent squares - Piața Victoriei, Piața Unirii, and Piața Libertății - showcase baroque, secession, and neoclassical architecture rivaling Vienna or Budapest. Known as the "City of Flowers" for its beautiful parks and gardens, Timișoara was named the 2023 European Capital of Culture, sparking a renaissance of creative spaces and cultural venues.
