Crete is Greece's largest island and the cradle of Minoan civilization - Europe's first advanced society, which flourished 4,000 years ago. The Palace of Knossos, with its mythical labyrinth of the Minotaur, is one of the Mediterranean's most important archaeological sites.
Beyond history, Crete is a world unto itself: the dramatic Samariá Gorge (Europe's longest), pink-sand beaches at Elafonissi, the Venetian harbor of Chania, wild mountains rising to 2,456m, and a fiercely proud food culture that rivals any in Greece. Cretans say they're Cretans first, Greeks second.
