Meteora is one of the most extraordinary places on Earth - a forest of massive sandstone pillars rising 400 meters from the Thessalian plain, crowned by ancient monasteries that seem to float in the sky. The name means "suspended in air," and the UNESCO World Heritage site fully lives up to it.
Of the original 24 monasteries built from the 14th century, six remain active and open to visitors, each requiring a climb up steep stairs carved into the rock. The monks originally reached them by rope nets and baskets hauled up by windlass - a terrifying journey of faith. The combination of natural wonder and spiritual heritage makes Meteora one of Greece's most unforgettable destinations.
April to June and September to October are ideal (18-28°C). Morning mist around the pillars is magical. Summer is very hot. Winter can bring snow, adding drama but closing some monasteries.
