Mudgee is a charming wine region in the Central West of NSW, known for its excellent Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay. The region's name comes from the Wiradjuri word 'moothi' meaning 'nest in the hills,' and the town sits in a fertile valley surrounded by rolling farmland.
Mudgee has established itself as a food and wine destination with over 35 cellar doors, Australia's first certified organic vineyard (Dobroyde), artisan producers, and a thriving farmers' market. The town retains its colonial heritage charm with wide streets, heritage pubs, and sandstone buildings.
Visit Mudgee in autumn (March-May) for harvest season and wine events, or spring for pleasant weather. Summer can be very hot. Winter is crisp but perfect for red wine tasting by the fire.
