Perth is the capital of Western Australia and one of the most isolated major cities on Earth, sitting closer to Singapore and Jakarta than to Sydney. This splendid isolation has bred a fiercely independent culture, a laid-back lifestyle, and a city that feels entirely different from its east-coast counterparts. With more sunshine hours than any other Australian capital and a Mediterranean climate, Perth is built around outdoor living.
Kings Park and Botanic Garden, one of the world's largest inner-city parks at 400 hectares, crowns the city with sweeping views of the Swan River and downtown skyline. The park is home to over 3,000 species of Western Australian wildflowers, making it spectacular in spring. Below the park, the Swan River widens into a series of bays perfect for sailing, kayaking, and waterfront dining in suburbs like Crawley and Applecross.
Perth's beach culture is extraordinary. From the famous Cottesloe Beach with its Norfolk pines and sunset views to the wild, unspoiled beaches of Scarborough and Trigg, the Indian Ocean coastline stretching north and south of the city offers some of Australia's finest swimming and surfing. Just a 25-minute ferry ride away, Rottnest Island (Wadjemup) is a car-free paradise famous for its quokkas - the world's happiest animal - crystal-clear bays, and excellent snorkeling. Perth's food and wine scene has matured significantly, with the Swan Valley wine region just 25 minutes from the CBD and the Margaret River wine region three hours south producing world-class wines.
The best time to visit Perth is during spring (September to November) and autumn (March to April), when temperatures are warm and pleasant without the intense summer heat. Perth has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
Spring (September to November) is arguably the most beautiful time to visit Perth. Temperatures rise from 18-23°C in September to 22-28°C in November, the wildflower season transforms Kings Park and the wider Western Australian landscape into a carpet of color, and the days grow long and sunny. The Perth Royal Show in September and the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition at Cottesloe Beach in March are major cultural highlights.
Summer (December to February) is hot and dry, with temperatures regularly reaching 30-40°C and very little rainfall. The long, hot days are perfect for Perth's beach culture, with the Fremantle Doctor - a cooling afternoon sea breeze - providing welcome relief most days. Summer evenings are balmy and perfect for outdoor dining.
Autumn (March to April) brings moderating temperatures of 22-28°C with continued dry weather and beautiful light. This is an excellent time for Rottnest Island, the Swan Valley wine region, and outdoor dining. The Margaret River Gourmet Escape food festival draws international chefs.
Winter (May to August) is Perth's wet season, but it's mild compared to most cities. Temperatures of 10-18°C with regular rain make it the greenest time of year. Winter storms can be dramatic along the coast, and whale watching season runs from June to November as humpbacks pass close to shore.
