Wave Rock is one of Australia's most iconic natural formations - a 15-metre-high, 110-metre-long granite cliff shaped like a giant breaking wave. Located near the small wheat-belt town of Hyden, 350 km east of Perth, the rock's wave shape was formed by 2.7 billion years of weathering and water erosion.
The iron-stained bands of colour streaking down the rock face create a dramatic visual effect. Nearby attractions include Hippo's Yawn (a mouth-shaped rock), Mulka's Cave (with Aboriginal hand stencils), and the Lace Place (delicate salt lake). The surrounding wheat-belt landscape offers a glimpse of rural Australian farming life.
Visit Wave Rock in spring (September-November) or autumn (March-May) for comfortable temperatures. Summer is very hot (35°C+). Winter is mild but nights are cold. Spring wildflowers add colour to the surrounding bush.
